- C.S.M.P. Digest Sat, 09 May 92 Volume 1 : Issue 76
-
- Today's Topics:
-
- Official Soft Drink of Mac Programming
-
-
- The Comp.Sys.Mac.Programmer Digest is moderated by Michael A. Kelly.
-
- These digests are available (by using FTP, account anonymous, your email
- address as password) in the pub/mac/csmp-digest directory on ftp.cs.uoregon.
- edu. This is also the home of the comp.sys.mac.programmer Frequently Asked
- Questions list. The last several issues of the digest are available from
- sumex-aim.stanford.edu as well.
-
- These digests are also available via email. Just send a note saying that you
- want to be on the digest mailing list to mkelly@cs.uoregon.edu, and you will
- automatically receive each new digest as it is created.
-
- The digest is a collection of articles from the internet newsgroup comp.sys.
- mac.programmer. It is designed for people who read c.s.m.p. semi-regularly
- and want an archive of the discussions. If you don't know what a newsgroup
- is, you probably don't have access to it. Ask your systems administrator(s)
- for details. (This means you can't post questions to the digest.)
-
- The articles in these digests are taken directly from comp.sys.mac.programmer.
- They are not edited; all articles included in this digest are in their original
- posted form. The only articles that are -not- included in these digests are
- those which didn't receive any replies (except those that give information
- rather than ask a question). All replies to each article are concatenated
- onto the original article in the order in which they were received. Article
- threads are not added to the digests until the last article added to the
- thread is at least one month old (this is to ensure that the thread is dead
- before adding it to the digests).
-
- Send administrative mail to mkelly@cs.uoregon.edu.

- Having beaten a big deal deadline today, I can ask something I
- have been wondering for months now.
- What exactly is the official soft drink of Mac programming?
- My personal favorite is Dr. Pepper, which has just enough caffeine
- to keep me awake for days at a time without embalming me in the process.
- However, Jolt, Squirt and Mountain Dew have been mentioned.
-
-
- P.S. Dr. Pepper is not to be confused with the mixed drink known as
- the Flaming Doctor Pepper, which consists of a pint of Weinhard's Ale,
- rum 151, amaretto and some butane. Perhaps this could become the official
- mixed drink of Mac programming end-project celebration, something which I
- intend to investigate rigorously in the hours ahead. ;-)

- Well, Pepsi and Jolt used to be my favorites, but my doctor recently took
- me off of caffiene (I go to the doctor - "I haven't been able to sleep for
- three days," says I. "Do you drink caffiene?" says the Doctor? "No," says

-
- Now I drink CAFFIENE FREE Pepsi..... And haven't gotten any serious

- needed element of programing... any research on this?

- When I worked in DTS, Mountain Dew was the drink of choice (in fact, if
- you've ever seen a dogcow button, the background is supposed to be the
- same green as that on a Mountain Dew can -- the person who made those
- buttons went to the button manufacturer with a Mountain Dew can and

-
- Here are some interesting figures off the top of my head. Someone once
- gathered some figures on the number of "units" of caffeine per 12 ounce
- drink (I don't know what units you measure caffeine with).
-
- Coffee: ~220
- Tea: ~120
- Jolt: ~74
- Coke: ~54

- I suppose it depends on exactly how one defines "soft drink." If you mean a
- carbonated drink, the choice amongst those I know (including myself) would have
- to be the old dependable Coke Classic. I usually find myself with a big
- A&W root beer mug full of orange juice, however. (It may be somehow related
- to the fact that I do most of the little Mac programming I do on Saturday
- mornings, while waiting for my fiancee to get up & about.)

- Hi, yourself, dude. The Dew is still the drink of choice. For those
- away from North America, Mountain Dew is a carbonated citrus-flavored
- beverage, or as Tim Dierks just told me, "a clear, lemon-lime flavored,

- Amanda sounds like my dream mate! Too bad I already have one. :-)
-
- Espresso and Cappucino should _definitely_ rank high on the list
- of official beverages. And of course, Belgian dark chocolate or a
- biscotti cioccolotti puts just the right spin on the mood adjustment
- provided by the coffee.
-
- At TMS, we couldn't talk management into buying an espresso machine,
- so we had to get it off site. On site, we had to drink regular coffee
- (but I made sure it was thick :-).
-
- We made up for our lack of espresso by instituting a little ritual:
- When the old coffee can was empty, we would escort it to the storage
- area in a solemn procession, occasionally accompanied by a dirge.
- We would then circle around the new coffee can, inhale the aroma as
- the new can was opened, and then dance around the can in ecstasy.
- For some reason, the Windows programmers never caught on to this
- ritual. Probably a general lack of karma on their part. :-)
-
- Alas, bonsai no longer flourish at TMS: The mac programmers are gone.

- Try phenylalanine. It's an amino acid that's a precursor to norepenephrine; you
- can buy it over-the-counter at your typical health-food store like G.N.C. But
- talk to your doctor first - for one thing, if you're a phenylketonuric, you
- DON'T want to get any extra phenylalanine. If your doctor doesn't know anything
- about this, get the book Life Extension by Pearson and Shaw, and try to find a

- > Here are some interesting figures off the top of my head. Someone

-
- Caffeine is measured in milligrams (mg). The amount of caffeine in a cup of
- coffee varies radically, depending on how it's made.
-
- Coffee, brewed 206 mg
- instant 114 mg
- cappucino 146 mg (General Foods, from powder)
-
- Coca-cola 46 mg
- RC 36 mg
- Mello Yello 52 mg
- Mr. Pibb 40 mg
- Mountain Dew 54 mg
- Pepsi Cola 38 mg
- Diet RC 48 mg
- Tab 46 mg
-
- The other diet colas are the same as the non-diet versions.
-
- Note that 200mg of caffeine is like taking 10mg of amphetamines, in what it
- does to your body (ie, the "pick-me-up", it raises your metabolism about 10
- percent). If you take more than 500mg of caffeine a day, that's enough to start
- worrying about. Caffeine stimulates the release of epinephrine and
- norepenephrine, without providing the ability to make more. Hence, you're up
- for a while, then you crash. Cocaine does a similar thing with acetylcholine,
- only much more severe. You can take phenylalanine (an amino acid) to produce
- more norepenephrine, without most of the side-effects of caffeine.

- I drink Pepsi. Lots and lots of it. This is probably because the soft drink
- vending machine in our building doesn't have many options (although curiously
- enough, it dispenses both Coke and Pepsi from the same machine! :-0)
-
- There's also a hidden symbolic meaning in the Pepsi can design. The logo
- is a circle composed of red and blue halves (foreshadowing the Apple-IBM
- alliance.) On the "old" cans, there were large red bands below the logo that
- covered most of the can's area. The "new" can design for the 90's* gets rid

- Visitors to CC3/CC4 (DTS is in CC3/3rd floor, the secret is now out)
- always wonder about the soda cans inside the wires. My classical answer
- is that during an earthquake the cans will dampen the side-wise movement
- of the building, hepp.
-
- Mark Johnson had an *impressive* wall of Coke cans, but that's gone.

- The Japanese were unclear on the concept. I suppose nobody bothered to
- translate Tech Note #31 for them. And that wasn't the only problem they
- had. When they first tried to get them made, I guess the printer didn't
- understand Kanji, because they came back saying "moof" in English. I
- still have some of those buttons around. Anyway, they eventually got it
- right. Apparently the equivalent in Kanji is pronounced something like
- "moo-wow". Just doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
-
- I would still vote for Mt. Dew. I knew I'd found a home when I first
- came to work for DTS and discovered that there were other people besides
- me that drank Dew. One of my prized possessions hanging in my office is
- a model biplane made entirely out of Mt. Dew cans.
-
- Of course I also heartily agree with those promoting beer. I'm always
- up for a pint of draft Guinness from Britannia Arms or a tied pint (23 oz.)
- of amber from the Tied House in Mt. View (notice that it rhymes with
- Mt. Dew).
